St. Andy's 4/9

posted Apr 11, 2011 5:46 AM by Matt Curfman

I had forgotten how long 80 minutes of rugby was....

Good things first....Scrums were fantastic, people played in unfamiliar positions and performed well,  we had our first real "hot" game and did decent (only 3 fell out/ myself included), a few had nice runs and made good decisions, fewer no look passes.  All around rugby knowledge is increasing.

The bad; numbers (only 11), hands, keeping a flat defensive line, hustle on kickoffs and to the breakdowns.

Bottom line..... Show up for practice, we work on alot of our issues out in practice so we don't have to do it during the game.  YOU SHOW UP FOR PRACTICE, YOU/WE GET BETTER.  We have made our in-season practice schedule more accomodating.  Wednesdays only.  People will still be there on Mondays but it is for fitness.  Running, agility, and other fun stuff.  If you can't make it, go for a run.  With Daylight Savings Time it's not getting dark till about 8.

Tackling was an issue, we did make tackles/wrap-ups but we needed to take them to the ground.  A flat defensive line would
have helped with this.

I had alot of fun on Saturday, the scrums were awesome.  The forwards did a tremendous job.  The backs did well too.  I can't wait for our next match.  Now if we could only have had a better touch judge. jk Whitterbug

HYDRATION!!!

posted Apr 10, 2011 10:15 AM by Todd Albala

Guys our match with St andrews was marked by three players coming down with heat related illness, one of which ended up in the Emergency room.  With the season working its way thru hotter and more humid weather, it is important that we maintain proper hydration and nutrition.  I have put together some links we should all take a few minutes and read.  The concept is simple, hydration is not a same day issue, requires some personalization based on how much you sweat and the game time conditions.
It is important that we understand that we all want to play and have fun  BUT  recognize we are not elite athletes, and need to take care of ourselves better.  We always have plenty of water and gatorade for the games.  We need to make sure we get someone to help bring on water at any breaks in the game, after scores, injury times etc.  In hot days we will ask the refs and other team to agree to take a water break at 20 minutes of each half.

Table rock game 4/2/11

posted Apr 3, 2011 8:48 AM by Todd Albala

Gents,
Tough loss yesterday. First the good: solid rucks, lineouts, scrums and defensive lines.  They could not score despite staying put on our 5 meter line.  Great job defensively.  Fitness seems to be getting better.  Allen as man of the match...score one for the old guys.
Now the bad: HANDS!!! we have got to do a better job of securing the ball. Take the tackle, rather than throwing up a prayer.  Look where you're passing to, none of these no look passes to nobody.  Run with support.  Learn where to be on set plays, to many unnecessary penalties off of the line outs and scrums.

Overall, everyone played with heart and commitment, no soft tackles, Cavin..do you remember anything of the game?
Keep running, Get out to practices, thats the way to get this team over the hump and start takingsome of these games

Andie's Game:

Gentlemen and Pack players,

I want start out with saying that I appreciate everyone’s commitment to the team and the club. We are still in the process of finding homes on the pitch for everyone.  Some of you guys had to play a position that you knew nothing about and maybe were not comfortable with it, but you stepped up with no bitching and gave it your best. That is all that I have ever asked from all our players.

These changes WILL continue and I ask that if you are told to play a position that you take that position and give it 100%. We want to maximize our player’s potential and make sure that we get everyone in a position that they can excel in.

Andie’s Game:

The game was a little bit of a mess I have to say that I was not happy to see so many dropped balls, stripped balls, and ball carries that were held up, and could not go to ground. We will work on this for the next 2 weeks at practice. Along with Scrums, and forward pods play, and BACKS drills. Those will be our main focus, from this point on.

I was impressed that we played 90 percent of the game on their half of the field. We had good tackles had only a few break through our defensive line, but we stopped them before they could capitalize on that (good hustle boys). There are improvements we are making, we just have to keep possession of the ball.

**Guys, I want see better numbers at practice!! Keep up the enthusiasm we still have a lot of games ahead of us. The games are going to get tougher as the season goes on, we have Southern Pines and Charlotte coming up they are definitely going to make us work for every inch. Should be some great match ups.

First Match

Piggies,

First off I wanted to say how proud I was to see everyone leave everything out on the field.  I think everyone can be proud of that.

I think that we should acknowledge the good things.  OJ gave us veteran leadership, Tommy finished his first rugby game,  Todd finished 80 minutes of rugby, John G is an absolute beast, Whit was more vocal, Cavin- Man of the Match- nothing else needs to be said, Rob had his big return to rugby, and Matt S. stepped up wherever we needed him.

The rucks were good (except for a coming in the side penalty on myself- my bad)  We had support, we had good communication(go down), reading of the rucks and mauls were good, and our fitness was better than I have ever seen.  Best of all, we mostly executed our gameplan (not 15 individual gameplans).

Things that we will become more proficient at tackling, finding our competant kickers, supporting the backs, and we will continue to condition.

Remember that was the first game of the season and we will get even better.

Congrats to Tablerock Rugby on their first Home game.  They have vastly improved since the Fall.  Like Whit said, we will be looking to get the trophy back April 2nd.

1st Match of the season

posted Feb 13, 2011 6:51 AM by ogg_whit@att.net

Ruggers,
Over all I think we had a good game!!! I feel as though all of the new players got a chance to see the speed of the game and what real tackles, rucks and scrums feel like. It was a hard fought game we had to work for every meter gained and we made Table Rock also work for every meter they gained. So hats off to all you Gargoyles for putting your head down and charging in to play. Good job boys!!! I am very proud of every player that came on to the pitch NO-ONE gave up, you cant coach guts or fortitude.

Some good things that we did:  rucking, carring the ball into contact, line outs, Playing as a team (personal fav.)
Some Neg's: Kicking, tackling, postitioning on pitch, confusion of some players (new guys).

Now that the first game is over we know what we need to do and we will do it, I want guys out at practice, there is alot to discuss and lots to go over and drill on.  Mostly small things put they make all the difference.

** Congrats to Michael Cavin as the player of the match, he won this due to his ability to step up when needed to move postion from flanker to prop and he did a great job as a prop. Michael also ran the ball hard, was in numours rucks, and landed some great tackles. Michael great job! Keep up the great work you do on and off the pitch. Boys congradulate Michael when you see him for a great game he played in Morganton.

Lets stay focused we have a long tough season this year, Practices are mondays and wed. eve. I want to see more numbers out there.

Lastly, I wanna congradulate Table Rock Rugby on there first game ever keep up the work guys, see you in April and we will be taking the trophy back then, so dont  get to attached.

Tune in here for the inspirational messages/in-depth match analysis/sage wisdom from our Captains you don't get when you miss a practice or a game, or for some of us who can't remember the game due to hard shots taken on the field and the number of shots taken during the post game social!
